Group one got grapefruit capsules before meals, group two got grapefruit juice, group three got half a grapefruit, and group four got a placebo (nothing). The placebo group lost about l/i of a pound, the grapefruit capsule group lost 1.1 pounds, the grapefruit juice group lost 1.3, and the real grapefruit folks lost 1.5. Overall, only the fresh grapefruit group reached "statistical significance," but among those with metabolic syndrome, all three grapefruit groups lost significantly more weight. Insulin resistance was improved in everyone. |

People taking capsules were given a small amount of apple juice to match the calories of the grapefruit and the grapefruit juice. In every other respect, the subjects were encouraged to follow their usual eating habits.
By the end of the study, people eating the fresh grapefruit lost an average of 3.6 pounds, those drinking grapefruit juice lost 3.3 pounds, and those taking grapefruit capsules lost 2.4 pounds. In contrast, subjects taking the placebos lost only one-half pound. |

Drinking grapefruit juice has been linked to an increased risk of kidney stones in two large studies.31'32 Whether grapefruit juice actually causes kidney stone recurrence or is merely associated with something else that increases risks remains unclear; some doctors suggest that people with a history of stones should restrict grapefruit juice intake until more is known.

Drug Safety 28:677-94, 2005] The same problem is documented when taking grapefruit juice with a blood pressure pill. The blood pressure drug may work too well, resulting in an inordinate drop in blood pressure and dizziness experienced by the patient. The FDA hasn't banned grapefruit juice; it just instructs users of drugs to avoid simultaneous consumption of grapefruit with certain drugs. Chaparral may be unfairly characterized as a liver toxin when it is no more harmful than grapefruit. This may explain the inconsistent reports of liver toxicity. |

In a controlled study involving forty-nine smokers, researchers at the University of Hawaii found that drinking three 6-ounce glasses of grapefruit juice a day reduced the activity of a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 that is thought to activate cancer-causing chemicals found in tobacco smoke. It's reasonable to think that might be helpful for nonsmokers as well, since reducing the activity of an enzyme that activates cancer-causing chemicals is a good thing no matter where the chemicals come from! |
| Don't take grapefruit juice with medicine. Why? It causes the medicine to stay in the bloodstream longer, which in some cases can boost the amount in your system to a dangerous high. |

Avoid carbonated beverages that contain phosphates as these have been associated with the development of stones. grapefruit juice should also be avoided as it has been linked to the formation of kidney stones in some studies. Avoiding calcium is generally thought to be unhelpful, and some doctors even advocate calcium supplementation as a preventive measure. Generally, avoiding a high-protein diet, particularly animal protein, is wise. |

•Bran muffins, whole-grain cereals and other high-fiber foods. Fiber slows the absorption of penicillin, ampicillin and other antibiotics. In some cases, it binds to drugs in the intestine and prevents most of the active ingredient from entering the blood.
Warning: Fiber can also block the absorption of the heart drug digoxin (Lanoxin). Don't consume high-fiber foods or fiber supplements within two hours of taking this drug.

If you cannot tolerate grapefruit juice or if it tends to make you nauseated, you may use equal amounts of freshly squeezed lemon and orange juice instead. The effect is the same with either choice.
Preparation
> Drink 1 container (32 oz.) of packaged or freshly prepared apple juice (or see other options below) per day for a period of six days: (You may drink more than that if it feels comfortable to do so.) The malic acid in the apple juice softens the gallstones and makes their passage through the bile ducts smooth and easy. The apple juice has a strong cleansing effect. |

And research shows that grapefruit juice raises the risk of stones by as much as 44 percent, so if you're prone to stone formation, avoid it. Ditto with salt. In one review paper in the journal Nutrition Reviews, researchers theorized that stone formers may be more sensitive to salt than non-stone formers and that for those folks, a reduced intake of salt may decrease the risk of kidney stones.

If you need more data to put the urban legend about restricting calcium to rest, consider this: The largest prospective epidemiological study ever published on calcium and kidney stones (New England Journal of Medicine) concluded that high calcium intake is associated with a decreased risk of symptomatic kidney stones. The 1993 study, which followed more than 45,000 men, found that those who consumed less than 850 mg of calcium per day were at an increased risk for kidney stones. |

A bit of apple juice, cider, or fresh orange or grapefruit juice (include the fruit sections) is delicious in place of milk. But you can also eat your cereal with milk, oat milk, almond milk, or nonfat soy milk. And cereals are far from the only breakfast option. Pancakes made from whole-wheat flour (containing no eggs and no oil) are really good! Toasted whole-grain bread topped with summer-ripe, fresh peaches heads my own list of outrageously delicious breakfasts. You should also try sliced bananas, ripe mangos, strawberries, or other favorite fruits on toast. Think outside the box. |

The interaction of citrus fruits with these systems is nicely illustrated by the surprising effect that grapefruit juice can have on the metabolism of certain drugs. In the course of a study intended to determine the impact of alcohol on the effectiveness of a commonly prescribed cardiac arrhythmia medication, researchers accidentally discovered that the grapefruit juice used to mask the taste of the alcohol was responsible for doubling the amount of medication in the bloodstream, and increasing the number and severity of side effects. |

Tips on Using Grapefruit
SELECTION AND STORAGE:
• There are two main varieties of grapefruit, white and pink/red, that can be found year-round.
• Choose firm and heavy grapefruits for their size. Avoid those that appear to have water-soaked areas or have an overly soft spot at the stem. Watch for signs of dehydration and skin collapse at the stem. |

The fact that drinking grapefruit juice can affect how your body breaks down the most widely prescribed cholesterol-lowering drugs proves this point. When taken at usual doses, the blood levels of the drug are found to be twice as high after drinking double-strength grapefruit juice for three days. There is an enzyme on the surface of the small intestine whose production is inhibited by chemicals in the grapefruit juice. This type of interaction of chemicals in grapefruit juice with your genes is an example of how diet can powerfully affect the body's enzyme systems. |

Besides, she argued, nutritionists "have long cautioned that children should not drink more than 4 to 12 ounces of juice a day, depending on their age, because it has a lot of sugar and calories without the fiber found in whole fruit and, with the exception of orange and grapefruit juice, not much else."

John's wort and grapefruit juice can decrease levels of drugs by increasing the action of P-glycoprotein. The very introduction of toxic anticancer drugs activates more P-glycoprotein that makes cancer cells even more resistant to treatment. Chemotherapy then proceeds in a backwards fashion.
