The research reveals something truly astonishing: That a mere 3 servings of raw cruciferous vegetables a month slashes bladder cancer risk by 73 percent in non-smokers. That's just three servings in a whole month. Imagine the anti-cancer effects derived from drinking a small amount of cruciferous vegetables every single day! (And it tastes great, believe me, because you're using such a small amount of cruciferous veggies compared to all the other ingredients.)

We also have a few different nutrients that are found in cruciferous vegetables. cruciferous vegetables are a family of vegetables that include broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts and they're somewhat noteworthy because they have a natural hormone detoxifier in them.
They have tremendous heath benefits in addition to helping to protect against and fight breast cancer. In fact, women who eat the most cruciferous vegetables have a 40 percent lower incidence of breast cancer. We have two different elements in there from the cruciferous vegetables like indoplex and indole-3-carbinol. |

Like other cruciferous vegetables, broccoli speeds up removal of estrogen from the body, helping suppress breast cancer. It has also anti-viral, anti-ulcer activity. In addition, broccoli is a super source of chromium that helps regulate insulin and blood sugar.
Note for the Vata type: You may still benefit somewhat from broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables if you cook them with a good amount of oil or butter.

Matthew Wallig, DVM, PhD, professor of comparative pathology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, discovered that crambene, one of the phytochemicals in cruciferous vegetables (like broccoli), is more active when combined with another better-known cruciferous phyto-chemical, indole-3-carbinol. There's also evidence that components in broccoli have synergy with components in other plant foods. |

In lab studies, cruciferous components have shown the ability to stop the growth of cancer cells in tumors in the breast, endometrium, lung, colon, liver, and cervix. And studies that track the diets of people over time have found that diets high in cruciferous vegetables are associated with drastically lower rates of prostate and bladder cancer. For example, men who ate three servings of these vegetables a week reduced their prostate cancer risk by 41 percent, as reported in the September 2006 issue of Environmental Nutrition. |

Cabbage—The Romans' Cancer Cure
Cabbage was revered in ancient Rome as a cancer cure. Today, we know its cancer-curing effects are from its numerous anti-cancer and antioxidant compounds. Cabbage speeds up estrogen metabolism, which is thought to help block breast cancer and suppress growth of polyps, a prelude to colon cancer. According to research, eating cabbage more than once a week cut men's colon cancer odds by as much as 66 percent. |

In a recent animal study, when curcumin (found in turmeric) was mixed with phenethyl isoth-iocyanate (a compound found in cruciferous vegetables) the combo had significant protective effects on implanted prostate tumors—though neither compound used alone showed any effect. (Curried cabbage, anyone?) Recently in the Journal of the American Nutraceutical Association, a spice blend of turmeric, ensian root, hot paprika, and vanillin was tested for its effect on cholesterol and was found to have "a beneficial and clinically relevant long-tem effect," decreasing non-HDL cholesterol by 16 percent. |
| Broccoli is a member of the brassica family of cruciferous vegetables—the same vegetable royalty that includes bok choy, cabbage, kale, kohlrabi, and Swiss chard. These vegetables are excellent sources of a family of anticancer phytochemicals called isothiocyanates. Isothiocyanates fight cancer by neutralizing carcinogens—the "bad guys" of the cancer battle. They do this by reducing their poisonous effects and stimulating the release of "carcinogen killers," speeding up their removal from the body. |

While you're at it, add some cruciferous vegetables like broccoli to your sauce. They contain chemicals that prevent cancer.
YOU Tip: Oil On. In a test of olive oils, researchers found anticarcinogenic properties in monounsaturated fat. That would mean that olive oil, rich in monounsaturated fat, is not only a heart helper but may also deter cancer. That helps explain why, compared to northern Europeans, southern Europeans, whose diets tend to overflow with the oil, have lower rates of both heart disease and cancer.

The arugula plant, like many others in the cruciferous family, contains glucosinolates. When you chew the plant, the glucosinolates mix with an enzyme (myrosinase) that turns them into other compounds called isothiocyanates, which have documented anticancer properties. Isothiocyanates combat carcinogens by neutralizing them, reducing their poisonous effect, and stimulating the release of other substances that help combat them. Isothiocyanates also inhibit cell proliferation. |

Being a member of the cruciferous family, it is endowed with anti-cancer indoles that help regulate estrogen and fight off colon cancer. It contains more beta carotene than spinach and twice as much lutein, the most of any vegetable tested. Kale is also high in the antioxidants Vitamin C. Collard Greens and other green leafy vegetables share similar benefits.
Nuts
All nuts have anti-cancer and heart-protective properties. Almonds and walnuts particularly help balance cholesterol levels. |

The spread of cancer is halted by agents that thin the blood, such as fish oil, garlic, vitamin E and magnesium, and by vitamin C, which prevents cancer cells from sticking to artery walls. cruciferous vegetables like Brussels sprouts and broccoli along with flaxseed lig-nans and soy phytoestrogens help to dampen the hormonal-controlled growth of cancer.
If your oncologist isn't recommending these anti-cancer agents, he is mired in the past. |
| If you are trying to beat cancer, or prevent its recurrence, a bad diet must be replaced by one that is filled with dark-green leafy vegetables, berries, grapes, bran, flax, cruciferous vegetables, garlic, onions, etc.
Most of the recommended dietary measures to prevent or treat cancer help to control iron, which is the primary growth factor for cancer cells. The Gerson diet, plant food diets, fasting, whole grain diets and various dietary supplements (such as green tea, pine bark, etc.) all help to control iron. |
| Indole 3-carbinol, a type of glycosinate found commonly in cruciferous vegetables is reported to reduce cancer risk. [Journal Agriculture Food Chemistry 53:5164-9, 2005]
It is also reported that molecules in soy inhibit cancer. It is also frequently claimed that soy is a food that can interfere with thyroid function. However, this has been disproven in a controlled study. [Journal Medicinal Food 6:309-16, 2003] Asian women who emigrate to the United States and alter their traditional diet are more likely to develop thyroid cancer. |
| For example, the anti-cancer drug oltipraz is a synthetic version of the molecules found in cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower, brussels sprouts and cabbage.
Business Week magazine says there are now 402 cancer drugs in development, compared to 126 a decade ago. The American public is going to have these drugs literally shoved down their throat.

| However, this would require the consumption of two glasses of tomato juice and two pounds of cruciferous vegetables per day. [Cancer Causes Control 16:125-38, 2005] Similarly, omega-3 oils from flaxseed or fish beneficially control genes and prevent breast cancer. [Advances Experimental Medicine Biology 375: 85-95, 1995] Dietary supplements would be a more practical way of reaching these protective intake levels.

Like all cruciferous vegetables, broccoli rabe contains flavonoids, sulforaphane, and indoles, which help prevent cellular degeneration and may help protect against cancer. Sulforaphane, for example, has been shown to induce powerful enzymes that protect rodents from tumors. And flavonoids in general have extensive biological properties that promote human health and help reduce the risk of disease.

Major culprits are such cruciferous vegetables as broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage, as well as onions, garlic, eggs, and dairy products. Because many of these foods are also high in fiber, they can be especially bothersome—albeit very healthy. Also to blame are foods that contain sulfites, a form of sulfur added as a preservative. Dried prunes and other fruits are prime examples, as are baked goods, beer, wine, apple cider, and many other foods and beverages as well.
Smelly farts—and stools, for that matter—can also signal an overabundance of bacteria in the large intestine. |
