By far the worst offenders are spinach, rhubarb, tomatoes, collards, eggplant, beets, celery, summer squash, sweet potatoes, peanuts, almonds, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, Concord grapes, parsley, and cocoa. Avoid all red meat, and limit your consumption of other animal products. Avoid calcium overload by eliminating dairy products from your diet.
Molasses, green leafy vegetables (with the exception of spinach), leeks, cashews, cherries, strawberries, dried fruits, figs, and eggs are all rich in iron. Food to Avoid • Spinach, rhubarb, tomatoes, and chocolate are high in oxalic acid, a substance that blocks the absorption of iron. • If you're pregnant, you've already been advised to stay away from caffeine, which can harm the baby. Caffeine also inhibits iron absorption, as do carbonated sodas and dairy products. • Do not take iron pills with meals that are high in fiber.
Green leafy vegetables (except for spinach—see the note about oxalic acid under Food to Avoid in this section), leeks, cashews, cherries, strawberries, dried fruits, figs, kelp, and eggs are all excellent sources as well. If you're a vegetarian and can't eat calf's liver, include one or two servings of green leafy vegetables at every meal. Blackstrap molasses is also rich in iron, so take a spoonful of it every day. Blackstrap molasses can usually be found next to the pancake syrup at your grocery store. Make sure to read the label carefully, as you don't want molasses that's been sulfured.
