| As she clipped her five-day cereal grass sprouts and tossed handfuls into the container, I casually remarked, "You do go to a lot of trouble to juice them, don't you?"
Without ever taking her eyes off of what she was doing, she responded, "Yes, but just look at how much the trouble has been worth — an 80-year-old granny in the body of a 35-year-old woman!" Even by my own picky standards of feminine beauty, she wasn't all that bad-looking, considering the incredible expanses of age involved.
Eydie was more to the point, when I spoke with her next. |

DIET: Whole foods diet with emphasis on lots of fluids, raw foods (50% to 75% of the diet), and sprouts. Also good are green leafy vegetables, rutabagas, sesame seeds, and sesame butter.
If on the drug levodopa, must decrease the foods that are rich in vitamin B6—whole grains (especially oats), raw nuts (especially peanuts), bananas, potatoes, liver, and fish. According to Jonathan Wright, M.D., most drug treatment for Parkinson's is done with Sinemet (trade name for a combination of levadopa and carbidopa), for which one doesn't need to avoid vitamin B6. |

Lowers Serum Cholesterol
Cabbage and its kind, especially items like Brussel sprouts, can dramatically lower what is often called "bad" cholesterol (low-density lipoproteins). This "bad" cholesterol usually causes hardening of the arteries in the course of time. At least two scientific publications have reported these findings. By including cabbage and its other members in your diet more often, you stand a very good chance of not developing coronary heart disease later on in life.

After supplementation with 3.25 mg boron daily, plasma levels of D2 increased in men over 45 and postmenopausal women on low magnesium and copper diets. |

Following what it calls a "common sense approach," the ACS began advocating the following measures: (1) avoid obesity; (2) cut down on total fat intake; (3) eat more high-fiber foods such as whole grain cereals, fruits and vegetables; (4) include foods rich in vitamins A and C in your daily diet; (5) include cruciferous vegetables (such as cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, kohlrabi and cauliflower) in your diet; (6) eat moderately of salt-cured, smoked and nitrite-cured foods; and (7) keep alcohol consumption moderate, if you do drink (ACS, 1988). |
| Although some dietary approaches (such as macrobiotics) continue to be listed on the unproven methods list, the Society itself now advocates some special foods, such as the cruciferous family of vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, kohlrabi, and cauliflower) to prevent cancer. This is a far cry from the days when anticancer diets were considered the very hallmark of quackery.
But beyond these largely verbal measures, little is done to stop the incidence of cancer before it occurs. |

But as I mentioned, to get a physiologically meaningful dose of L-dopa from fava beans, you have to eat a pound of them (or about two ounces of sprouts).
If you do decide to go with the beans, you have to deal with their notorious problem—gas.
For some people, beans get easier to handle intestinally as you eat more of them. In preparation for the CBS morning show, I ate a 16-ounce can of fava beans one day at lunch. Within two hours, the expected side effect ensued. The next day, I ate a second can. Again I became gassy, but not until four hours later. |
| That reduces the cost of a physiological dose to just over 10 cents—the cost of a handul of sprouts. Even though I've discussed the potential of fava beans with dozens of people over the last five years, I know of no one with Parkinson's disease who has taken the food approach seriously.
If you'd like to add fava beans to your diet, it's vitally important that you let your doctor know that you are doing so, and why. (It might help to take along a copy of this book. |
| If fava beans seem to help, try sprouting them. The sprouts contain even more L-dopa.
W*. Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba). Ginkgo is best known for improving blood flow through the brain. But it also seems to boost blood flow into the penis, thus aiding iffy erections.
In several small studies, physicians have obtained very good results with 60 to 240 milligrams daily of a standardized ginkgo extract. In one nine-month study, 78 percent of men with impotence due to atherosclerotic clogging of the penile artery reported significant improvement without side effects. |

^Y Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare). Fennel is another estrogenic herb that has been used for centuries to promote milk production. You could include it in Bustea to complement the fenugreek. Don't use fennel oil, however. In pregnant women, the oil can cause miscarriage. And in doses greater than about a teaspoon, it can be toxic.
W Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens). This plant is best known these days for its ability to shrink an enlarged prostate gland in men. |
| The seeds and sprouts have a centuries-old folk reputation as breast enlargers. In fact, 100 years ago the herb was a key ingredient in the original formula for Lydia Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, a popular remedy for "female troubles"—everything from menstrual pain to postmenopausal vaginal dryness.
As I learned in Arkansas, there are also modern testimonials for fenugreek's effects on the breasts and good reason to believe this herb really works. |

Alfalfa seeds and sprouts contain the amino acid L-canaverine, which is structurally related to the amino acid L-arginine. L-canaverine has been shown to have anti-tumor activity against certain types of leukemia cells in mice and selective toxicity in dog cancer cells grown in vitro. L-canaverine inhibits the growth of certain bacteria and this could be the basis for the anti-bacterial action of alfalfa extracts. The amino acid has also been found to inhibit the growth of some viruses, including herpes simplex. |

You'll be amazed how much better salads taste when you add lots of fresh crisp mixed sprouts. Use polyunsaturated oil in your dressing and use the smallest amount you can. Depend on herbs like garlic to add zest.
After eating your salad, you should feel mildly stuffed. Then, you would probably do well to eat about half of what you normally do in the way of steak, pork chops and other meats—which all tend to be excessively high in saturated fat and even calories. |

Using a ladle, stir in the sprouts, wheat germ, bulghur and barley, and as much remaining whole wheat flour as you can. Turn out onto lightly floured surface. Knead in enough of the remaining whole wheat flour to make a moderately stiff dough that's smooth and elastic (6-8 mins. total kneading time).
Next grease the inside of an electric slow cooker, turn the heat on low and let the pot warm. Then unplug it and put your dough inside, covering the top. Turn once. Let rise until double in size (between 45 mins. and an hour). |

BURDOCK {Arctium lappa)
Brief Description
There are basically two kinds of burdock. Common burdock (A. minus) is the kind more commonly found intercropped with corn and wheat in the midwest. On the other hand, greater burdock is the one primarily harvested for its root as an important source of food for the Japanese. They use it there as we use carrots here. |

If Lind had taken his sailors off sugar or given them infusions of pine needle tea or bancha tea dr fed them cabbage, sprouts, scurvy grass, seaweed, or raw fish—all of which abound in ascorbic acid—the British might have had an entirely different monicker.

Different medical journals have separately confirmed that raw cabbage and raw cabbage juice is just the ticket for relieving and healing any kind of gastrointestinal ulcer, be it duodenal, peptic or what have you. Half a cup, morning and night, of raw juice is a terrific antacid remedy plus a great ulcer healer. |
| Both grains contain growth promoting factors in their young shoots or sprouts. Interestingly enough, the ancient Roman gladiators were called hordearii or barley men because they consumed so much of this grain just before entering the amphitheaters to battle their opponents. Barley and wheat may be used in cooked breakfast cereals, breads, pancakes, soups, salads and delicious drinks to give increased strength and muscle expansion to those who work out regularly with weights. |

Thus almost any food plant—and oats, flaxseed, soybeans, tomatoes, carrots, garlic, onions, broccoli, cabbage, sprouts, citrus fruits, cranberries, grapes, and tea are only the best-studied examples—seems to protect against disease in clinical studies. The nutrients and other plant chemicals that occur in greatest amounts in these foods become candidates for use as "magic bullets," but numerous other possibilities have barely been explored. Potentially protective components also have been isolated from fish, fermented dairy foods, and even beef. |

But the contribution of sprouts and salad bars to food-borne disease is still small compared to that of meats, dairy products, and eggs.
The meat, dairy, and egg industries know their products are the ones most frequently implicated. They say, however, that the problems resulting from these pathogens are not their fault—it's the consumers' responsibility to cook and handle animal foods properly. The companies want, naturally, to shift liability away from themselves. |

Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, Swiss chard, kale, spinach, beets, carrots, sweet potatoes and yams, all contain powerful anticancer nutrients. These foods are high in beta-carotene, which has been shown to reduce and/or slow rapid cell growth in cancers. In order to reduce your risk of cancer, it is important to eat five to ten servings of fresh fruit and vegetables a day, every day, not just once in a while.

Cockleburs promulgate the usual way but hedge their reproductive bets: of the two seeds housed inside each prickly bur, one germinates in the spring, while the other waits patiendy in the soil and sprouts a year later. Lambs-quarters, foxtail, and pigweed are now-or-never annuals that pelt the landscape with a yearly seed rain, as weed scientists refer to their prodigious reproductive output. The seeds of these three species are among those most commonly encountered in Corn Belt fields, where the soil contains between 600 and 160,000 living weed seeds per square meter. |

Miller found that seeds which had been watered with regular tap water had an eight-percent germination rate, whereas seeds watered with healer-treated water showed a 36-percent germination rate—or a fourfold increase in the number of new sprouts. Even more surprising was Miller's discovery that seeds which had been watered with magnet-treated water showed more than an eightfold increase (68-percent rate) of seedling germination.
In addition to measuring germination rates, the plants were examined for differences in growth rates as indicated by the final height of the plants after eight days. |
