New research shows vitamin D slashes risk of cancers by 77 percent; cancer industry refuses to support cancer prevention

Broccoli, garlic, onions and sprouts all have powerful anti-cancer effects, as do dozens of rainforest herbs (Cat's Claw, for example), Chinese herbs and Western herbs. But the FDA threatens and censors any company that dares to mention cancer prevention on its supplement products. Why is the FDA enforcing a policy of nutritional ignorance with U.S. consumers? Why does the federal government want people to remain ignorant of methods for preventing or treating cancer? You probably already know the answer to all these questions, because the answer is the same for each one: Corporate profits.

If you use diluted ocean water on your sprouts, on your plants at home, your fruit trees, on your garden -- you start getting, in addition to just the fulfillment of flavor, the power of the food and the amount of food you need to eat goes down. Why are people obese? They're eating food that has no minerals, so the body goes, "Hey, I don't know when to shut off," and it just keeps eating and eating and eating -- and ultimately, what the body's really looking for is minerals. Usually, it's only one or two different minerals like magnesium or sodium, or some major mineral like that.

Ann introduced a variety of sprouts into our lives. She also came up with a sprouting bag. Whenever my family travels, we always pack sprouting seeds to guarantee a fresh supply of greens. Dr. Ann called sprouts Living Foods. It is hard to imagine that these words didn't exist some time ago. Dr. Ann discovered the many healing benefits of blending foods, especially greens. Dr Ann Wigmore lived the last several years of her life almost completely on blended foods, a large part of which consisted of greens. She noticed that blended foods were assimilated more easily.

Mike: You know, you're one of the people who's always talking about the mineralization, which is really what turned me on to this idea using ocean water for growing sprouts. Wolfe: Best ever. Really what nutrition comes down to -- before we get into the things about raw foods versus this and that and the other thing -- the main thing about food is: Are we getting enough minerals in our diet? Mike: Right. Wolfe: It's been shown, for example, when a plant gets a disease.
Sure, not everybody should be eating massive amounts of lettuce or kale, but if you look at what's out there, all these different categories -- fruits and different vegetables, nuts and seeds, seaweed, wheat grass, superfoods, sprouts, and kimchis and sauerkrauts -- it's just unbelievable the choices we have before us. Mike: You're making me hungry just thinking about it. What about the book? Where can people find the book? Wolfe: Well, it's now available. RawFood.com has been our website we've had up as an online health food store for about 11 years, so we put it up there first.

Review: Automatic sprouting machines from Freshlife and Easygreen

Mike Adams, the Health Ranger
See article keywords and concepts
While this approach does use more water than the Freshlife sprouting machine, it's really not as much water as you would think -- certainly far less than a gallon a day, and that's sufficient to grow five different kinds of sprouts at the same time. The other thing I like about this unit is that it appears to be quite sturdy and has no plumbing. There's just one moving part -- the water mister -- and in time that will probably fail, but it doesn't have the complexity of a water pump, so I expect it to last a lot longer than the pump on the Freshlife Sprouter.
But in order to grow your own sprouts, you have to use a sprouting device or machine, and there's a lot of talk on the internet about which sprouting methods are the best. Should you use a sprouting bag -- a cloth sack that you simply put seeds into and then soak with water? Should you use a sprouting tray -- a simple tray with tiny holes in the bottom and a small water plate underneath? Should you use a Freshlife Sprouter -- a cylindrical-shaped sprouting machine that has an automatic timer?
You eat the sprouts, toss the trays into your automatic dishwashing machine, and the job is done. The EasyGreen Automatic Sprouter functions on an external timing device. It ships with an external clock that you plug into a wall outlet. This timing device provides electricity to the water-misting unit according to a schedule you set. To make the unit more elegant, the timing could have been put into the unit itself, but I don't see any long-term problem with having the unit on the outside of the machine.
Right now I have my unit misting for about 10 minutes every three hours, and that seems to provide more than enough water to grow all the sprouts I need. So, although it is the most expensive, I like the EasyGreen Automatic Sprouter unit the best for simplicity of use and ease of maintenance. You might spend $100 for the Freshlife sprouter, but I would say go ahead and spend another $100 or more and go for the EasyGreen sprouter.
Be sure to use drops of hydrogen peroxide in your sprout water to eliminate the growth of fungus, mold and bacteria in your sprouts. It works extremely well. The EasyGreen Automatic Sprouter is found at EasyGreen.com The FreshLife Sprouter is found at FreshLifeSprouter.

Traditional people seem to have known intuitively that the sprouts are not as healthy as they look.14 Science has now shown us that short-term germination increases the strength of soy's antinutrient fractions; long-term sprouting plus fermentation will decrease and nearly eliminate them (see Chapters 15-20). Either way, the plant estrogens remain present. No wonder soy sprouts are mentioned in historical accounts as useful, sometime-pharmaceuticals, not as daily food.15 EDAMAME: SWEET GREEN ADOLESCENCE Edamame is the Japanese word for green vegetable soybeans.

You Don't Have to be Afraid of Cancer Anymore

It's puzzling why, with the revelation that Brussels sprouts provide three times the cancer- fighting molecules as any other cruciferous vegetable, consumption of this single vegetable is not emphasized. Knowing that indole-3 carbinol and diindolymethane are vulnerable to degradation from exposure to light, it is strange that suppliers of these supplements don't encapsulate the products in opaque capsules.
It would require 130 raw Brussels sprouts or one quarter of a head of raw cabbage to obtain sufficient amounts of indole-3 carbinol to prevent cancer. [Gynecologic Oncology 78: 123-29, 2000; Nutrition & Cancer 16: 59-66, 1991] This means concentrated indole-3 carbinol supplements would be beneficial. Here is where an argument arises. If taking a pill that attempts to duplicate cruciferous vegetable intake, does a person take indole-3 carbinol, or its breakdown product, diindolymethane? How do you determine whether to take indole-3 carbinol or diindolymethane supplements?
Integrative Cancer Therapy 3:5-12, 2004] The cruciferous vegetable assault on cancer should actually be termed the Brussels sprouts cure since this vegetable provides three times more molecules (glucosinolates) that convert to indole-3 carbinol than any other vegetable in its class. However, there is evidence that concentrated forms of indole-3 carbinol can inhibit cancer more effectively than hefty intakes of fruits and vegetables. [Integrative Cancer Therapy 3:5-12, 2004]. Nonetheless, this doesn't diminish the impact of a diet rich in cruciferous vegetables.
Diets high in cruciferous vegetables - broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, bok choy, and Brussels sprouts - are known to prevent cancer. Indole-3 carbinol was identified as the primary anti-cancer agent in these plant foods. However, there is no indole-3 carbinol in cruciferous vegetables. It is formed only when crushed such as in chewing or macerating foods. Once in the stomach, hydrochloric acid then converts indole-3-carbinol to diindolymethane, believed to be the most potent anti-cancer end product of metabolism after consumption of cruciferous vegetables. How does indole-3 carbinol work?
Monaldi Archives Chest Disease 59: 207-11, 2003] Cruciferous vegetables (Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower) produce a strong risk reduction for lung cancer. [Lancet 366: 1558-60, 2005] But there is much more that can be done to prevent lung cancer beyond a healthy diet, as outlined below. Vitamin D and lung cancer Why are lung cancer researchers missing the obvious? An article in the Washington Post reveals the blinders that cancer researchers wear.
