Potatoes and onions may be prevented from sprouting by application of maleic hydrazide. This is a potentially toxic chemical that is also sprayed on most tobacco crops in the U.S. Some enzymes such as amylase may be used to stimulate food reactions such as the digestion of starch or the fermentation of sugar. Lightly press them into humus-rich, weli-drained, acidic soil in full shade. Mulch with chopped, well-rotted leaves.
