Although three or four glasses of orange or grapefruit juice at one sitting may give you an upset stomach, citric acid has no effect on an ulcer one way or another. The cardinal rule for people with peptic ulcers is to avoid any food or liquid that they know from previous experience causes them distress. The incidence of peptic ulcers has decreased significantly in the past few years and one of the reasons may be the increasing substitution of saturated fats by vegetable oils. Vegetable oils contain linoleic acid, a precursor of prostaglandin, which protects the lining of the intestinal tract.
Since the average American diet contains about 60 to 65 meq a day, you do not really need to increase your potassium intake by more than 10 meq a day—or an extra glass of grapefruit juice. That should reduce your risk of stroke by 40 percent regardless of its effect on your blood pressure. Blacks (50»percent of whom over age sixty-five have high blood pressure) who live in the southeastern United States and consume an average of only 30 meq of potassium, less than half the average consumed by the rest of the country, have the highest stroke incidence in the nation.
