Drinking coffee, tea, and wine may lower the risk of kidney stones, while grapefruit juice may increase it.
Q In Japan, the incidence of kidney stones has been rising steadily since the middle of this century, when dietary changes typical of an industrialized nation began to occur. People in Japan who develop kidney stones consume far more proteins, refined carbohydrates, fats, and oils than did their forebears.
Q Most kidney stones eventually pass by themselves. |
| Do not take these with grapefruit juice.
Q Steroid drugs are even more powerful suppressors of allergic reactions than antihistamines. Doctors often prescribe the steroid beclomethasone in nasal inhalers sold under the brand names Beconase and Vancenase. These can be very effective in relieving symptoms, but some of the steroids are bound to get into the rest of the body. Steroids suppress immune function.
Q Some physicians recommend desensitization shots for people with hay fever. These are expensive, painful, and not risk-free. |
| You can substitute grapefruit juice if desired.
Q To relieve acute pain, try using hot castor oil packs on the gallbladder area. Place castor oil in a pan and heat but do not boil it. Dip a piece of cheesecloth or other white cotton material into the oil until the cloth is saturated. Apply the cloth to the affected area and cover it with a piece of plastic that is larger in size than the cotton cloth. |
| It was discovered in 1991 that grapefruit juice has the ability to inhibit an enzyme that metabolizes many drugs, thus allowing levels of the drugs to build up in the body. Older adults may have a special susceptibility to this reaction.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been trying to understand more about drug interactions, particularly in the past fifteen years or so, and has been developing laboratory testing programs to reveal possible problems early in the game. |

SAFETY
Some people are allergic to citrus peels. When such an allergy is suspected, caution must be employed when eating citrus fruit (see "Tips for Preparing"). But whether you are allergic or not, citrus peels should not be eaten in any significant quantity. |

Always check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medication with grapefruit juice.
If you're prone to kidney stones, research shows you can lower your risk by drinking more fluids. But don't choose grapefruit juice. In a recent study, an 8-ounce serving of wine lowered the risk of kidney stones by 59 percent, while coffee and tea reduced risk by 8 to 10 percent. But grapefruit juice increased risk by 44 percent. r

Preparation
Drink 32 oz. of packaged apple juice (or see other options below) per day for a period of six days: (You may drink more than that if it feels comfortable to do so.) The malic acid in the apple juice softens the gallstones and makes their passage through the bile ducts smooth and easy. The apple juice has a strong cleansing effect. Some sensitive people may experience bloating and, occasionally, diarrhea during the first few days. Much of the diarrhea is actually stagnant bile, released by the liver and gallbladder (indicated by a brownish-yellow color). |

In the course of a study intended to determine the impact of alcohol on the effectiveness of a commonly prescribed cardiac arrhythmia medication, researchers accidentally discovered that the grapefruit juice used to mask the taste of the alcohol was responsible for doubling the amount of medication in the bloodstream, and increasing the number and severity of side effects. A similar effect was observed for statins, a class of medication used to lower blood cholesterol. These observations show to what extent citrus fruit can regulate the systems involved in the metabolism of foreign substances. |

A glass of grapefruit juice can measurably increase the blood concentrations of cholesterol-lowering drugs, such as atorvastatin (Lipitor), simvastatin (Zocor), and lovastatin (Mevacor), among others. It does the same for drugs commonly used to control blood pressure, such as amlodipine (Norvasc), nifedipine (Adalat, Procardia), and verapamil (Isoptin, Calan). Ditto for antihistamines and some psychiatric medications, such as diazepam (Valium).
The grapefruit effect lasts for 24 hours or more, and in rare cases, the concentrations of drugs in the oloodstream can increase to toxic levels. |

If you are taking a prescription medication, ask your doctor if you should avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice. Some drugs, such as Neoral (oral cyclosporin), already carry a warning. For a complete list of drugs currently known to be affected by grapefruit, see www.Drug-Interactions.com.

Just because your doctor prescribes a medical drug does not mean it is safe for you. Very few tests have been done on drug interactions with other drugs or with common foods. Drug prescriptions can be a gamble of life and death that you are risking when you enter your doctor's office. The bottom line is that all pharmaceutical drugs contain poisons that have a detrimental effect on your health. Your heart pays the ultimate price for these constantly offered and highly praised "shortcuts" to health; they cut your life short. |

| Pomegranate juice, two times a day, and grapefruit juice with the seeds and the skins are valuable too. Lemon, lime, and bee propolis with 10 drops of colloidal silver are also helpful. Because of the vitamin C content, these juices will create acidic urine (but not acid in the body), which creates an unfavorable environment for bacteria in the urine and bladder. Chlorophyll from spirulina is exceptionally good for the body as well.
Recommended vitamins and minerals are vitamin C, vitamin A, and zinc. Actually, the best treatment is intravenous vitamin C, for which you have to go to a doctor. |

Recent studies have shown that taking medicine with grapefruit juice can cause some drugs to stay in the body longer, and at higher levels, than taking them with plain water. While this property of grapefruit juice appears to be beneficial for people taking the antire-jection drug cyclosporine (it can reduce the need for high doses), it can dangerously multiply the effect of some blood-pressure medicines. |

Two hours later she was given one glass of wine. The local hospital emergency room then ran a blood alcohol test. The doctor administering the test was clearly shocked when her blood alcohol level registered 2.2.
