Intelligent Medicine: A Guide to Optimizing Health and Preventing Illness for the Baby-Boomer Generation

Ronald L. Hoffman, M.D.

During the day he would drink lots of healthy apple juice and other natural fruit juices, and eat a granola bar or trail mix with raisins for snacks. Alan had eliminated a lot of fat from his diet, but he wasn't losing much weight. Worse, he'd often feel tired and irritable and would snap at his wife or get argumentative. Sometimes Alan would feel his heart pounding and would break into a cold sweat and start worrying about a heart attack. He couldn't figure it out —why was this supposedly healthy diet not doing anything for him?

Both advocate the avoidance of refined sugars and the minimal intake of natural sugars from honey, fruit juices, and maple syrup. Both emphasize alkaline foods over acid-forming foods,2 and both call for adequate fluid intake. Acid-forming foods include sugar, meat, sour fruits like lemons and pineapple, and tomatoes. Alkaline foods include most vegetables and natural sweeteners like honey Another element of my recommended diet is food rotation: the same food should not be eaten more than two times per week, with at least three days between. Otherwise food intolerance or allergies may develop.
Limit or completely avoid the use of refined sugar in any form, such as commercial fruit juices, candy, pastries, and sweetened cereals. The consumption of all other refined or processed foods, fried and preserved foods (including chips and commercial pickles), and processed fats and oils, like margarines including soy spreads, should be discontinued. Avoid all cow's milk and milk products such as yogurt and cheese, since dairy products increase intestinal fermentation and yeast activity, are highly allergenic, and may contain hormones and antibiotics. Strategy #2.
There are over 4,000 known flavonoids and many occur in common beverages like tea, coffee, beer, wine, and fruit juices. These include red- and blue-pigmented anthocyanidins; the white and pale-yellow compounds rutin, quercetin, and kaempferol; citrus bioflavonoids; and green tea polyphenols. Most medicinal herbs are also rich in flavonoids, such as ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) and milk thistle (Silybum marianum). These compounds have considerable health benefits including anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, antiviral, antibacterial, anticarcinogenic, and antioxidant activity.
Additional fluids in the form of pure water, non-acidic fruit juices, and vegetable broths and mixed vegetable juices are also necessary. Common herbal remedies for managing fever include elder flowers (Sambucus nigra) or yarrow flower (Achillea millefolium). Drink one cup, taken as an infusion, until mild sweating occurs. Chinese herbs are excellent for managing fever; they are used as teas, instant granules, tablets, powders, or capsules containing concentrated extracts (see part 2). Homeopaths are legendary for the number of remedies they use for managing febrile illnesses.
Avoid sweetened and concentrated commercial fruit juices. Drink 1-2 glasses of fresh, nonacidic fruit juice each week. Supplement your diet with enzyme-containing, phytonutrient-rich foods. Papayas and ripe pineapples are the best sources of enzymes. Supplement your diet with concentrated green powders from wheat or barley grass, alfalfa, or algae like spirulina or chlorella. Consider adding sea vegetables to your diet in small amounts, especially red marine algae like nori.

One of the key facts to know about supermarkets, which will streamline your shopping time, is that all of the fresh food items, including fruits, vegetables, fruit juices, meat, poultry, seafood, dairy, and sometimes even frozen food and bread products, are usually located around the perimeter of the store. Packaged and canned items are located in the center aisles of the store. Knowing this helps make healthy shopping easy and quick, since the majority of foods you will buy on a regular basis are fresh foods that are found on the outside aisles of the market.
Avoid these fruit juices if you're trying to lose weight. Look for calcium-fortified orange juice, to help meet your daily calcium requirement. Remember that fruit juice doesn't contain the fiber that fresh fruit does, so it won't fill you up as much as fresh fruit. Remaining on the perimeter of the store, move on from produce to the dairy section, and then on to fresh seafood and the deli. Dairy_ At the dairy section, the simple rule of thumb to follow with all the products is this: Every dairy purchase you make should be low fat or fat free.

If the liver appears to be affected, drink carrot juice instead of fruit juices. Whenever possible sponge and friction-rub the body with apple cider vinegar or raspberry vinegar washes. This will help bring down the fever. However, if the fever is raging, conduct this instant temperature-reducing strategy: Plunge the patient for a few seconds into a full bath of warm to cool water. Towel dry immediately! Make sure there are no drafts in the room. Such an immersion will also help the patient fall into a restorative sleep. (Do not use for an infant or a feeble invalid.

When correctly fired, the lead is supposed to be sealed in, but the glaze can begin to leach lead after being exposed to scouring soaps or the acids in fruit juices, wines, vinegars, and coffee. The FDA estimates that 14 percent of imported dishes exceed safe lead limits. And one study of brandy stored in lead crystal for over five years discovered that levels of lead soared to over 20,000 micrograms of lead per liter (the safe level in water is 50 micrograms). Lead-soldered food cans, once a menace, have now been outlawed. Here is what you can do to protect yourself from lead poisoning.

Even fruit juices should be taken in moderation, and some patients can't handle them at all. If you stick to vegetables and vegetable juices for the first month or two and introduce fruits gradually, you'll be able to tell if they make your symptoms worse." ¦Ill Hydrotherapy At Uchee Pines Institute, a natural healing center in Seale, Alabama, co-founder and co-director Agatha Thrash, M.D., a medical pathologist, treats CFS with a three-pronged approach of strict diet, gentle exercise and a 15-day regimen of therapeutic baths.
Juice Therapy Fresh fruit juices can be very helpful for those with varicose veins, says Cherie Calbom, M.S., a certified nutritionist in Kirkland, Washington, and coauthor of Juicing for Life. Dark-colored berries such as cherries, blackberries and blueberries contain anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins, pigments that tone and strengthen the walls of the veins, Calbom explains. She adds that pineapples are rich in the enzyme bromelain, which helps prevent blood clots, an uncommon but serious complication of varicose veins.
Juice Therapy Besides adding fiber to the diet, which softens the stool, a number of fruit juices contain substances that may help ease hemorrhoids, says Cherie Calbom, M.S., a certified nutritionist in Kirkland, Washington, and co-author of Juicing for Life. Dark-colored berries such as cherries, blackberries and blueberries contain anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins, pigments that, according to Calbom, tone and strengthen the wads of hemorrhoidd veins, which can minimize pain and swelling.
Bailey's patients abstain from solid foods for several days, drawing their nourishment from large doses of fresh vegetable and fruit juices. "Juice fasting enhances the body's natural healing capacity," explains Dr. Bailey. "Juices provide optimal nutrition yet take very little energy to digest. And because you're not spending six hours trying to digest a fatty, high-protein meal, the body has more energy to devote to repairing itself.
Tyler, you must maintain alkaline urine by eating a diet rich in milk, vegetables, fruits and fruit juices. But because sugar—even fruit sugar—has been shown to depress the immune system, I tell people to get their vitamins from vegetable juices rather than from fruit juices when they're fighting infections."To prepare Calbom's antioxidant-rich Garden Salad Special, juice three broccoli florets and a clove of garlic with four or five carrots, two celery stalks and half of a green pepper. To shore up the immune system, drink this blend or other fresh juices several times a day, says Calbom. For more information on juicing techniques, see page 93.

Instead of sugar, eat naturally sweet foods. Add fruit juices or fresh or dried fruits to dishes that need to be sweetened, or use one of the many sweeteners that do not rely on sucrose as their sweetening agent. Aguamiel The naturally sweet, nutritious sap of the century plant, used for centuries as a food, tonic, and sweetener. It tastes like a blend of honey and molasses, though is less sweet than honey. Use like you would honey, rice syrup, or barley malt syrup.

Tea_ Harmful ingredients: pesticide residues. Loose tea is generally fresher and has a better flavor than tea in bags because it is in its more natural leaf or flower form, rather than being ground into tiny particles. Also, tea bags may contain bleaches and dyes in the paper and be held together with heat-sealant adhesives. If you want to avoid caffeine, you'll want to choose herbal tea rather than black tea.

Parenthetically, you lose bioflavonoids when you strain your fruit juices, particularly citrus juices. Don't strain them. Better yet, eat the whole fruit. What with the arbitrariness of choices of nutrients in formulas for supplements, it is possible you will have difficulty in finding a multiple or a Vitamin B Complex concentrate which offers selenium, or one which offers enough. To cover that contingency, let me note that organically bound selenium, which is the form in which this nutrient should be used, is now available.

The report indicates that dietary sources of water represented by fruits, liquids (especially fruit juices and milk), and vegetables are greater for infants than for older children or adults, and should be considered in estimating the risk from dietary exposure to potential human carcinogens. Such age-dependent differences in dietary patterns need to considered when evaluating lifetime cancer risks (Goddard et al. 1995). Dietary patterns can change markedly over time with changes in food preferences and the introduction of new foods.

Any effects of small amounts of methanol possibly present in fruit juices and wine tend to be offset by their caloric content and the presence of ethanol (Gilger 1959). This contrasts with the absence of nourishment in the case of "diet" drinks. Recent studies by Lund et al (1981) and Nisperos-Carriedo and Shaw (1989) have clarified the methanol, ethanol, and acetylaldehyde concentrations of citrus products. Contemporary gas chromatography methods were used.

Orange juice, along with other fruit juices, is a concentrated sugar and—like sugar—causes the blood sugar to jump and then fall in the well-known roller-coaster effect. Too much juice contributes to hypoglycemia or blood sugar imbalance. According to Oriental medicine, hypoglycemia is the first step—and an avoidable one—toward diabetes. Unlike juice, a whole orange provides fiber and a powerful antioxidant called glutathione.
