Selenium. Selenium, an essential trace mineral and vital antioxidant, works synergistically with vitamin E. One study concludes that supplemental beta-carotene and selenium enhanced immune function in a healthy elderly group. Dozens of animal and in vitro studies point to selenium in the prevention and treatment of cancer. |

It's always best to enjoy your raw fresh fruit or a raw vegetable garden salad before you eat any cooked foods. See recipe on page 231.
The alkaline forming foods are the most important to your body. Some of you will say, "raw fruits and vegetables give me gas, etc." That is because you are on the acid side and, when you eat the alkaline foods, they start to houseclean and move the toxins out of your bloodstream and body. So you avoid eating them and use the weak excuse that they don't agree with you. |
| In summer, you can add fresh fruit in season: peaches, strawberries, berries, apricots, etc. instead of the banana. In winter, add apples, kiwi, oranges, pears or persimmons or try sugar-free, frozen organic fruits. Serves 1 to 2.
Patricia's Delicious Health Popcorn
Use freshly popped popcorn (I prefer air popped). If desired, use olive, soy, or safflower oil or melted salt-free butter. Sparingly pour oil over popcorn and add several sprays of Bragg liquid Aminos and Apple Cider Vinegar. Sprinkle with nutritional yeast large flakes. |

PESTICIDES AND WAX
Most of the fresh fruit available in grocery stores has been treated with pesticides while the fruit was growing. Residues of these chemicals pose a potentially substantial health risk. You should therefore wash all fruits well before eating them. Some types of fruit may even need to be peeled.
In addition to being treated with pesticides, many fruits are sprayed with a thin layer of wax to extend their shelf life and make them shiny and more "eye-appealing." Unfortunately, this wax coating also traps pesticide residue and prevents it from being washed away. |

Certain foods were highly protective against the lung tumors—primarily, fresh leafy green vegetables, carrots, tofu or other soybean products, fresh fruit and fresh fish. Once again, vegetables had a profound impact. Women eating the most carrots, fresh green leafy vegetables, and fresh fruit cut their chances of lung cancer by 90, 70 and 40 percent respectively.
WHAT TO EAT IF YOU HAVE LUNG CANCER
If you have been diagnosed with lung cancer, it's still good to eat more vegetables and fruits. The time has come when food may serve not just to ward off cancer but help actively treat it. |

That's because the water content of fresh fruit is higher, which adds more weight. So when they're examined side by side ounce for ounce for phytonutri-ents (except ascorbic acid) and phytochemicals, the dried fruit will appear to deliver more. Bear in mind that ounce for ounce, the same weight of dried fruit also will have a higher sugar content and more calories than the fresh fruit. cium. Ten dried figs have 269 milligrams of calcium, slightly shy of the amount of calcium delivered by an 8-ounce serving of dairy food. Figs are also a significant source of fiber. |

Scientists know for sure that happens from long-ago descriptions of the scourge known as scurvy, which was rampant from the 1300s until the early 1800s, especially among sailors who went to sea for months without fresh fruit. One graphic description of the ravages of scurvy noted, "Their mouths became stinking, their gums so rotten that all the flesh did fall off, even to the root of the teeth." The cure for scurvy, discovered by British naval physician James Lind in 1747, turned out to be fresh fruit, namely citrus fmits; the active agent was later identified as vitamin C. |

The vitamins contained in fresh fruit juices are essential for the body. Still, too much of any juice—particularly orange and grapefruit juice—can be harmful. Juices can increase the acidity of the intestine and then the body. Their high potassium content can drastically increase the activation and presence of histamine. This will signal undue stress to the body, and a crisis water-rationing state will develop.
The physical growth of the body of a child is an adaptive response to the stresses and demands placed on it. |

Urge Schools and Companies to Stop Marketing to Children
There are signs of public pressure leading schools to forsake contracts with soft drink and food companies, so pressure from parents, the general public, and the press can be powerful. Pouring rights contracts, as described in Chapter 7, have been renegotiated, and many districts have allowed their contracts to expire under community pressure. |

Whole fresh fruit will always have the lowest number of calories. Don't become so enthusiastic about polyphenols that you sip juice all day and develop a calorie overload. Get your polyphenol boost by mixing half water or seltzer and half 100 percent juice.
American Indians were right about the blueberry's ability to promote digestive health: rich in pectin, a soluble fiber, blueberries work to relieve both diarrhea and constipation. Moreover, the tannins in blueberries reduce inflammation in the digestive system, and polyphenols have also been shown to have antibacterial properties. |

Dried or fresh fruit as a decoction, liquid extract and tablets for internal use. Decoction or extract for topical use. Available as a concentrated extract standardized for anthocyanin content and prepared from the fresh fruit.
Stability testing of solid and liquid forms of purified bilberry extract under drastic conditions (such as mild and strong acid solution at elevated temperatures) did not produce important changes in the relative anthocyanin composition. Mild conditions did not produce significant degradation of the anthocyamns. |

A case-control study in Iran confirmed the inverse relationship between esophageal cancer and consumption of fresh fruit and cooked vegetables (Cook-Mozaffari, 1979; Cook-Mozaffari et al., 1979). The authors concluded that the disease might be caused by opium use in combination with diets low in fresh fruit and vegetables. (1980) also found a statistically significant inverse relationship, including a dose-response gradient, between risk of esophageal cancer and frequency of consumption of fruits and vegetables. |

Some of his detoxing symptoms included a tired, weak feeling, loose stools, night sweats, and increased urination. But the symptoms were mild and not even as bad as flu symptoms.
Jim had started cesium high pH therapy in January 2003. |

Eat one serving of any kind of fresh fruit (except oranges). If you have diabetes or hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), you should also avoid sweet fruits like grapes, pears, papaya, melon, or grapefruit.
Drink a glass of any kind of unsweetened juice (except orange juice) with 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C powder and 1 tablespoon of a fiber supplement (oat bran, gluco-mannan, or psyllium seed) added. Be sure to drink this quickly, as it thickens and can lodge in the throat. Follow it with a full glass of quality water. |

If you feel hungry between meals, eat a piece of fresh fruit or drink a cup of herbal tea. Combine herbal teas and one-third cup unsweetened fruit or vegetable juice for speed-healing. Drink at least six glasses of liquid during the day. Do not drink liquids with meals, only before or after.

Heat the mixture until the fresh fruit and the jam or jelly are thoroughly integrated. Then just repackage the blend in small portions and keep them in the freezer, not the refrigerator. This process reduces the sugar content of the commercial jam or jelly by half, and it adds the nutrients and phytochemical benefits of the fresh fruit—the best of both worlds. Some of my particular favorites are: fresh apricots combined with store-bought ginger marmalade; fresh rhubarb with strawberry jam; and fresh red currants with red currant jelly. |

Healthy breakfast choices include whole grain cereals, muffins, and breads along with fresh whole fruit or fresh fruit juice. Both hot and cold cereals, preferably from whole grains, may be the best food choices for breakfast. The complex carbohydrates in the grains provide sustained energy.
